    1958 Trunk Irons

I would appreciate any information on where I can find Trunk Irons for my 1958.
I have called several vendors that show them in their catalogs, but have now discontinued them. I am looking for originals that need rechromed or repros
You can E-mail me if you prefer. Thanks for the help

    Ron,

I beleive that Mary Jo Rohner did have them but you'll have to check with her.

They are very hard to get a hold of and I remember that Mike Greene waited for eight months to get his from her.

They ,like a lot of the model particular items only get reproduced in small quantities and only when a stack of orders are on the books so you just have to hope that it is at the end of the accumulation of those orders.

    Good Luck.

    Mark.

There's an outfit that advertises in Vette Vues that claims to have them (un-plated) for $398.95/pair; Buzz Products in Pittsburgh, (412) 921-0901. I have no idea what they look like - just noticed the ad yesterday.

        He has them

Just out of curiosity, I called the guy John mentioned (Buzz) and he does indeed have them. They're unchromed brass and a little heavier than the originals, but he says (and I believe) he's been the only supplier to the parts houses. He stopped selling them chromed because he was having so much trouble with his chrome place. Personally, I prefer handling the chroming on my end anyway. Too bad I already got mine (for about $700).

Just a little two cents from an article I've read ... re-popped trunk irons are made of brass and are heavier than the originals which I believe were made of some kind of pot metal. After you mount them, the deck lid doesn't want to stay up. Evidently alot of guys have had this problem. I wish I could remember where I read this article. (I don't have a straight axle) Hate to see you disappointed after spending all that $$$.

            Re: He has them

I had the brass "irons" on my '58 and they are CONSIDERABLY heavier than the originals, which were pot metal and hollow. But what other option is there today? To keep the trunk lid up, I changed the assist springs to heavier guage units from some common gate-closers from Stanley. One comment if you go with Buzz's units. Test fit them on your trunk lid before chroming. Mine had about 1/4" overhand on the big end, which was easily corrected by grinding away the excess length. Getting a decent plating job will be the challenge. Mike

GM Trunk Irons are heavy too!

The GM irons are in fact "Pot" or white metal castings and are very heavy. My trunk will not stay (fully) open with the GM parts.
