'67 327 L-79 Pulley Confusion, Joe Lucia please

I checked the achives and I read a good posting on this very subject by Joe Lucia. It was stated that the pulleys for the L-79 would only work if the Harmonic Balancer was 1 5/16 thick. The difference between this thicknes referenced by Joe Lucia and my L-79 "finned" 3817173 balancer which is 1 3/4 inches thick, is the problem. With the pulleys referenced in the '67 AIM for the L-79 alternator, power steering, water pump and the two stacked crankshaft pulleys, I do not have belt alignment off of the crankshaft, it is approximately .4" off. The other pulleys line up fine with each other. Now the '67 judging manual states that the L-79 crankshaft pulley should be a two groove pulley. Which brings me to a pulley advertised in Paragon for the 327 Hi po motors which is a two groove pulley, not saying it is correct, but I wonder if this pulley would solve my alignment problems. Any words of wisdom are welcome.

    Pulley Part number amendment

I thought I better clarify the pulley part numbers being used.
    P/S 3834720
    Alt 3829387
    C/S 3858533
    outer C/S 3751232
    waterpump 3770245

I read another archive in which a fellow wrote that he thought the outer C/S pulley 3751232 will not line up with the cast power steering pump pulley and does not fit well inside the 3858533 C/S pulley.

      Scott-----

There's an awful lot of confusion on these 66-67 pulley configurations and I'm not sure that I'm going to be able to fully resolve it. The GM information provided in both PRODUCTION references (AIM, etc.) and in SERVICE parts references is "sketchy", at best, and incorrect, at worst.

First of all, if I said that the L-79 balancer was supposed to be 1-5/16" thick in a previous post it was a typo. The L-79 balancer, GM #3817173, with or without "fins", is about 1-3/4" thick (1-11/16", I think, is the actual dimension). But, whatever, if you have the 3817173, then you have the correct balancer. Although not all 3817173's have the "fins", the only balancer that ever had the "fins" is the 3817173.

I believe that your water pump pulley, GM #3770245, is the correct pulley. Also, you alternator pulley, GM #3829387, should be correct and the GM #3751232 forward crankshaft pulley is correct.

The confusion here is over which crankshaft pulley and which p/s pulley is correct. I believe that the GM #3858533 is the correct pulley for your application. This pulley should work with the 3751232 forward pulley, too. You will note that 3858533 pulley has circular "extensions" which mate with the corresponding holes in the 3751232.

The real problem may be with the p/s pulley, assuming that's the "sticking point" in your situation. It's not really clear to me from your description exactly where the "0.4 misalignment" is occurring. However, there are some applications in which the cast iron GM #3834720 pulley is specified, but it will not line up with the other pullies. In virtually all of those cases, the GM #3770509, a stamped steel pulley, will line up and I believe this was the pulley originally used regardless of what the "specs" might say. The GM #3770509 pulley is discontinued, but available in reproduction.

        Re: Pulley Part number amendment

        Joe,
The misalignment is between the power steering pulley and the forward crankshaft pulley. Looks like I'll need to investigate the stamped steel power steering pulley you mentioned.

        Thanks.
