protecto plates .. how can you tell if ???

is there any good way to tell if a protecto plate is the real thing?

I have seen window stickers reproduced, Tank stickers reproduced and I am just curious is the same being done with protecto plates

Yes, Jim Clemens in Rockledge, Florida reproduces Protect-O-Plates. Be advised though, that he asks the prospective purchaser to sign a declaration stating that the purpose of the reproduced Protect-O-Plate is to compliment a restoration; not to falsify the true identity of the vehicle.

I understand that the repro P-O-P's don't have the little "bowtie" emblem impression; real ones do.

        John,

I've seen several of the reproduced protect o plates and they do in fact have a Bowtie emblem on them.

          Repo POP

Apparently there are some out there that don't have the Bowtie emblem. Just ask the guys that went to Bloomington and witnessed the actual fist fight that broke out because a trim tag and POP were determined to be "reproductions"

A Fist Fight because a POP and trim Tag were reproductions????? As mentioned earlier anyone purchasing these, signs a disclaimer indicating that these do not document the car but are for restoration purposes only. How does someone start a fist fight after he signs someting like that???? What has this hobby gotten to.

              Re: Repo POP/Fist Fight

              Fist fight? Why that's easy.

Someone takes a non-desirable Turdwood Green/vinyl 67 small block, swaps out the motor and trim tag and now has an ultra-desirable 427/435 with Resale Red paint and black leather interior.

He brings it to Bloomingflowers Yellow meet, and the judges find out he's got a trim plate that is a reproduction. The owner senses that his lie is being discovered as well as his $120,000 paid to Joe Truckblock his restorer going down the drain. He flips out, and the fistfight ensues.

I wasn't there, but talked with those who were. Imagine a scenario like this, and you get the picture.

                Re: Repo POP/Fist Fight

Let me get this straight. Some knucklehead makes every Corvette Restoration mistake possible and lays it on the guy who sold him a reproduction POP and trim tag after he signed a disclaimer. Not only does he blame him but he physically assualts the guy. That reinvents the term "Buyer Beware"

                    DAve,

No, as I understand it, he assaults the judge who tells him. Even worse.
