Windshield Wiper Problems

Hi - I just installed a restored windshield wiper motor and 5 port washer pump on my 70. The wiper motor nor pump work and I am getting voltage to the switch and to the motor. I lnly hear a loud click coming from the wiper relay in the console area. I have checked to ensure that the switch and motor are properly grounded. Will a defective relay prevent the wipers from working? Any suggestions?

It's been a couple of years since I worked on my '69 five port wsher/wiper assembly, but after I took the cover off I remember finding a solenoid coil inside and it was stuck. I cleaned the contacts and fooled around with it a little (in place) and it started to work.

I had a similar problem with my 71 (3 port) system. Relay would click inside, power to the connector at the wiper motor, but the wipers would not work. I am assuming that your wiper "service switch" (round knob under the steering column) is in the correct position and good and that the "limit switch" for the wiper door (on the firewall) is also good.

My problem was with the relay switch assembly inside the case as mentioned in the previous post. One of the ends of the coil winding was touching the case. Two small red wires come from this relay switch assembly over to the three post terminal board.

The washer pump will not work unless the wiper motor works because it is mechanically driven by the washer pump drive pin attached to the drive shaft and plate assembly in the wiper motor gear assembly.
