    65 P91 tire option

P 91 is a blackwall tire option that was discontinued early in the production year. I have a very late ( July 14) built car. I'd like to install blackwall tires. Were blackwalls available for a late 65 car. I don't know if it makes any difference but the car has KH original knockoffs. If blackwalls were available, any suggestions on a tire that will be a good driver and lose a minimum of points. The car will be flight judged.

I belive the black wall was standard all year. the p91 was a nylon blackwall. it was a step up from a rayon ? Bill

Jerry -- Bill is correct; the base tire was rayon-cord blackwall, and available throughout the model year. The P 91 was a NYLON extra cost option. There are a few P 91 RESTORER articles by Jay Stahl (Vol 20 #2, Vol 24 #1). John Amgwert provided Jay with GM tech "Notice of Production Change"s that document the option was cancelled on Nov 9, 1964 "(replaced by T 01 Goldline), effective when stock of P 91 tires is exhausted". There are a few documented cars as late as January '65. This contradicts the '65 NCRS Tech Manual (my 3rd edition, anyway) which says "appropriate for cars produced prior to Oct 14, 1964 only".

        Re: 65 P91 tire option

OK now I understand. I didn't recognize that there were TWO blackwall tire designs available. Can anyone tell me what a standard blackwall, Not P91, is supposed to look like, ie tread width, tread pattern, mold pattern etc. And does someone know a source for a reproduction OEM brand that matches the correct configuration, so I end up with only a 10% originality deduct. Thanks Jerry
