    '72 windshield wiper motor

I'm trying to finish restoring my '72, but one problem has me baffled. I cannot get my wiper motor to run. I'm not familiar with this kind of set-up (override switch) and would like to get a simple view of how it works. I can get the motor to run by putting power to the over-ride lead and grounding the motor housing but not by the 3 prong switch connection. I do have power to that connection and the motor is definitely grounded. The solenoid and relay is working when the washer switch is pushed. I even got another motor thinking that the old one was faulty, but it does the same thing. I can't even get them to work on the bench, other than the over-ride lead. So, I think that I'm dong something wrong. I'm not sure how all this works, just trying to explain the problem best I can. If anyone has any suggestions or knows someone who would help, I'd greatly appreciate it. I would like to call and talk to some one for better details. After hours and hours of troubleshooting, I'm frustrated. Thanks!
