    CE Engine ID Help

I'm finding very little info on CE #s and what I do find is basicly the same info. Hope someone can help. My # is hard to read as the hand punch job wasn't done very well.

    1969 350 300hp coupe (originally)
    3970010
    edelbrock manifold
holly carb 600 (I know this is a replacement)
    aluminum or alloy valve covers

    CE 9A929 7 8

    The CE is clear

The first 9 is a partial, no lower curved part of the 9, but it's got to be a 9 in my opion. indicating 1969?

The "A" if an "A" is a partial. Imagine the portion slightly above the horizontal line missing and that's what it looks like. No were have I seen in my research that a "A" would have been used. I did see something mentioned about an inverted V but can find the info on that.

    929 is clear

7 - further away from the "group" of #s and looks larger and deeper than the other stamps, like maybe it wasn't done at the same time.

8- last number, again further away but seems to match the other 8 in style

engine runs fine, some grey smoke sometimes when idleing and see smoke in the rear view after quick exceleration. Was thinking about installing a crate engine because of the non matching block. Any help appreciated.

    Chuck -

All you can tell from a "CE" stamp is the year it was made (1969) and the month (January - the "A"). The other numbers after it are an internal Flint Engine Plant code relating to how many replacement engines they made that year, which no one has been able to document yet. They were supplied both as short blocks and "fitted blocks" (no crank or rods), and the dealer ordered them by part number based on a chart for the particular application/internals. That part number was on the crate they came in, but was not on the engine itself.

Thanks Myles, I did find this site and it seems to offer the most info on CE engins of all the sites I've been to.
