C1 timing cover

Could anyone tell me if the timing chain cover on the 60' high HP, FI 315 cars
came with the timing scale up to and over the 22-24 degree marks? I have read that these cars timed at 22-24 BTC? Mine starts and runs well at that area, but is off the degree scale I have with the car? Any help would be appreciated.

No, the original timing tabs on these engines did not read to anywhere near the range you mentioned. If I recall correctly, they "maxed out" about 16 or 18 degrees BTDC. To use timing settings beyond this range one has to use an adjustable timing light or install degree tape on the balancer.

A fuelie with a mechanical advance distributer will have 16-18 deg initial timing. The actual number you are looking for is about 36-38* total advance at no more than 3000 RPM. This will frequently produce the 16-18 deg of initial advance, but you need to set the max advance and let the initial fall where it may.

I have used adjustable timing lights to set timing . My question is, did they have them in 1960 ? I don't remember them when I started in the garage in 71, only in the late 70s . Bob

I didn't know there was such a thing until 2-3 years ago. They obviously have been around a lot longer. In 1960, I guess the only option was to use a timing tape.
