    Is this a Correct Muncie..

In tearing down my 1964 Corvette for restification. I would like to know if my MUNCIE is the correct one. It is a NOM car so I have my doubts about the transmission too.

    Car VIN # 40837S112540

    Transmission main case # 3851325

    Tailshaft housing # 3857584

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Owning a car that has been molested by many owners is a real head scratcher.

    Steve------

The main case is correct for a 65 Corvette. I'm not sure about the tailshaft extension housing, though. My recollection is that 63-64 Corvettes with Muncies used a different tailshaft housing than 65-70. 65-70 definitely used the 3857584 housing and it is possible that late 64 did also. I'll have to check that later.

Just a quick thought on the case, both '64 and '65 used a '325 main case, however the '64 case had a top bolt boss at the rear of the main case shaped just like the one on the '63 muncie. There is a comparision picture of the '63-4 configuration and the '65 up configuration in the article I did for the Corvette restorer a couple of years ago. Also. I'm pretty sure that all '64's used the tailhousing that carried the speedo drive out the drivers side of the housing. I believe yours is the later version that comes out the pass side. If it's the original, the VIN should be stanped on the side of the main case, near the tailhousing

        Steve-----

I checked and discovered that your extension housing is not correct for a 64. Your extension housing should be GM casting #3846429. This casting number, in two variants, was used from 1963 thru mid 1965. As Bill Clupper mentioned, the difference between the original 64 extension housing and the '584 you have is, primarily, the side that the speedo gear is located on.
