    65 FI Pulley Part #

Sometimes a little knowledge is a bad thing. This may be a case of that. I have a 65 FI car that I've had for 30 years. I am in the process of a full restoration and just for grins I checked the part mumbers on my pulleys. The part on my water pump pulley is 3790356 and the part number on my balancer pulley is 3744043. The old GM parts book I have calls for 3756328 for the balancer pulley and 3829192 for the water pump pulley. The pulleys I have seem to line up just fine including with the idler pulley. The part numbers I have show these as 66 pulleys. My car was built in mid July of 65, is it possible they pulled some 66 pulleys out of the bin? Has anyone heard of these pulleys being used for a late SP HI PERF car? The parts books lists one of these as a "first design" is it possible what I have is a second design? Or are they just incorrect? HELP! My only hope is MORE knowledge.

    Jerry-----

I realize that you've had the car for a long time, but I think that you have incorrect pullies. Or, you have an incorrect engine with the correct pullies. Here's why:

First of all, the pullies that you mentioned are not necessarily "1966 pullies". Although these pullies may have been used on 1966 Corvettes, they were around much earlier and were used on earlier Corvettes.

Crank pulley GM #3756238 was used on 58-61 Corvettes as well as 1962 except SHP Corvettes. I can find no C2 use for it, at all. Pulley GM #3829192 is an idler pulley and not a water pump pulley.

The water pump pulley on your car, GM #3790356, was used on 63-65 Corvettes EXCEPT SHP and SHP/FI. It was also used on some 1966 Corvettes with base engine and A.I.R.

The crankshaft pulley on your car, GM #3744043, was used on 1963-66 Corvettes EXCEPT SHP and SHP/FI.

I'm not surprised that these pullies that you have line up; they were originally used in many applications as a set, so they should line up. The critical point here is that they were used in NON- special high performance applications. So, I really don't understand how they could have been originally installed on your car if your car is an original L-84.

By my reckoning your car should have crank pulley GM #3858533 which MAY be stamped either "3858533" OR "3766987". These pullies were used for ALL 62-65 Corvettes with SHP and SHP/FI engines as well as many 66-72 Corvettes with HP and SHP small block engines.

You should have water pump pulley GM #3770245. This pulley was used for late 1962 ("2nd design")with SHP and SHP/FI, ALL 1963-67 SHP and SHP/FI, and early ("1st design") 1968 with L-79.

      Re:Lifes a mystery

I agree with what your saying.Only gods long since departed from the St Louis area can figure some of this stuff out. I see the parts numbers you point out in the AIM. The parts 3756328 and 3829192 came out of an old parts book I have and showed as replacements for 65 FI applications.
Does anyone know someone with old pullies? Specifically 3770245,3850141,3858533 or 3766987? Thanks Jerry

Jerry/Joe; My 65 fuel coupe (feb built) has the 533 main pulley and the water pump one is the same diameter 2 groove, but I can't seem to find the # on it; it has never been cleaned really good yet but if I knew where to look for the # I can. David

Re:Part # located on front flat

Thankyou for looking. It's no small effort to find the numbers. The water pump pulley part number is on the flat under where the fan mounts. The balancer pulley is on the inside flat on the face. Thanks Jerry
Yours sound correct per the Aim. Mine seem to be an anomoly.

Jerry - I have had the best luck finding pulleys from Paul Baker, at Goat Hill Classics in CA. He can be a bit interseting to deal with, but he knows his products, and has a large selection. He has ads in the driveline...Craig

Very often, the GM #3770245 water pump pulley will not have a part number stamped on it.

Also, the GM #3858533 crankshaft pulley and the GM #3770245 water pump pulley are still available from GM.
