    IR Gun

I recently purchased an IR gun and would like to know where is the best place on the engine to take and obtain an accurate temperature reading. Should I aim the gun at the thermostat housing, temperature sending unit, intake manifold area below the temperature sender? Thanks

    Re: IR Gun

John, I allways shoot the thermostat housing. A word of advice, even though the Ir gun may have a laser sighting device on it, that does not indicate what it is taking the temperature of. The guns take an average reading of a constantly expanding cone-shaped pattern. The closer you get the gun to the area measured the more accurate the reading will be. I have technicians working for me who were trying to read the temp of an electrical termination from across the room!

I have found I get teh most consistant readings at the water passage in the intake just at the base of the thermostat. As John points out, the closer the better.

I'm looking into buying an IR gun. Where did you guys find yours? What manufacturers make quality guns?

I've had a Raytek MT-4 for several years - terrific diagnostic tool; most places sell them for $99.95, but check out the link below for $59.95.
