I recently purchased an IR gun and would like to know where is the best place on the engine to take and obtain an accurate temperature reading. Should I aim the gun at the thermostat housing, temperature sending unit, intake manifold area below the temperature sender? Thanks

Re: IR Gun
John, I allways shoot the thermostat housing. A word of advice, even though the Ir gun may have a laser sighting device on it, that does not indicate what it is taking the temperature of. The guns take an average reading of a constantly expanding cone-shaped pattern. The closer you get the gun to the area measured the more accurate the reading will be. I have technicians working for me who were trying to read the temp of an electrical termination from across the room!

Re: IR Gun
I've had a Raytek MT-4 for several years - terrific diagnostic tool; most places sell them for $99.95, but check out the link below for $59.95.
