    C-1 R/E Gear Change

I have a 4.56 (AQ Posi)rear end unit that presently has 4.11 gears installed. The question is, can I put 3.70 gears into the AQ Posi unit. If not what is the part number for a 3.70 Posi. The 4.11 has a de-acceleration whine that would not pass PV. I want to keep the original housing in the car as there were not that many that came from the factory with 270-3 Spd Close-ratio and a 4.56 Posi. Does anyone know the number of units that rolled out in 57.

Check the driveshaft flange nut and see if it is loose. Sometimes, they will loosen and you will get a whine on de-cel. Or you just need new pinion bearings and a professional set-up on these gears.

I've forgot more than I know but I believe the 4 posi carriers will not accept 3 gears. But why change the ratio?

When I went to change my 4.11 I was told there is a very rare spacer to use a 3 series in the 4 carrier. It sound slike it can be done but it is tricky. I found a second carrier but I know you dont want to swap rear ends. You might contact a couple rear end guys and ask about the spacer.

The ring gear spacers are available from several aftermarket sources, but are not a great idea if you're going to beat on the car hard; they require longer ring gear bolts, and the shear stress on the bolts is doubled.

You can 4 series gears with a 3 series carrier and a ring gear spacer.
The 4 series pinion is considerably smaller (about 1/4") than the 3 series pinions so the ring gear must be closer.

It does not work the other way.
