What is the best way to clean the deck surface/head surface on my 327 before assembly? I am replacing the old heads with a slightly used pair of World Prpducts Torquers, and although the surface on them is smooth, it looks dark and greasy. Would a simple wiping with laquer thinner or alchohol work, or do I need to do more (I have heard of people block sanding these surfaces, but is it really necessary for proper sealing)? Thanks in advance, Dan

Re: Deck Surface/Head Cleaning
If the heads are aluminum they need to be clean, flat, and smooth. On the deck surface you can clean and stone the surface by hand with a honing stone, like you would use to sharpen a knife, this will make the surface as flat as can be done at home. You will have to be very good about cleaning all the stone particles off and out of the cylinders and other holes in the top of the block after stoning. You can tape up all cylinders and lifter valley before starting. David- Top

Re: Deck Surface/Head Cleaning
The 'dark/greasy' look comes from residue of gasket sealer used previously. I consider it a MUST to get the deck lid surface flat and clean to guarantee a solid seal to your head gaskets. But, you can build your job as you please.
The residue is going to be baked on REAL GOOD! Scraping with a knife edge tool doesn't 'get it' in my book.... I do this to remove the majority of build-up then come back with a diamond filing pad being CAREFUL not to disturb the surface texture of the stamp pad.- Top
