1968 model year .. different frames?

During a discussion with an other person .. I was told that the 1968 corvette had two differnt frame designs .. an early design and a later design .. and that the two are totally differnt ..... is this true?

    Dale----

No, it's not true. 1968 Corvettes with manual transmissions (welded trans crossmember) used frame GM #3910770. Very late 1968 Corvettes with manual trans MAY have used frame GM #3949093. This frame has only minor differences with respect to the 3910770 and the two frames are COMPLETELY interchangeable.

ALL 1968 Corvettes with automatic transmission (bolted-in trans crossmember)used frame GM #3913838.

The 1968 Corvettes frames were unique to that model year.

I'll leave it to the '68 experts to comment on any minor differences in '68 frames, but will say that the basic Corvette frame design carried over from 1963 to 1982. Over the years there were small changes, which included some reinforcements, notches, and differences in the body mount brackets to accomodate changes in the body mount design.

If you have a '68 AIM look at the engineering change record at the bottom of the page that shows the frame and frame part number. This will give a good hint as to whether there were any running changes in the '68 frame.

Late '68 frames and onwards..not sure what sequence number.. were noticeably different by the addition of diagonal reinforcing struts that mounted on an aft crossmember where the rear kickup rails meet. (body mount 4).
They are welded in place on crossmember and perch out at about a 45 degree angle and again welded to side rail
They gave increased rigidity, especially for roadster bodies that tended to 'twist' with higher peformance engines.
I do not believe they are visible with body fitted, but are easily evident in most drawings.
I've seen both types of '68 frames..with and without this diagonal brace.
I believe these braces can also be purchased and fitted to frame.
There were industrial strikes back in '68 amongst frame manufacturers and this may/may not have played a role.
