1965 Black Out

The engine bay is cleaned, preped and ready for the blackout paint. There is signs of blackout in front of the radiator support frame, was this original blacked out or just over spray? What areas would have received black out, red primer or left natural fiberglass?

First, if you have an AO Smith body, the metal parts like the radiator support, should be green zinc chromate. If the car is St. Louis the parts are painted black. Then, imagine the body sitting there when it was first built with the hood on it. Primer would have been oversprayed near the edges of all interior panels and some paint overspray also in those areas. Then a mask was placed over the hood opening and the hood itself and the blackout operation performed. Now imagine that you were on the line and had a paint gun in your hand and you didnt particularly give a sh--. You lean over and quickly black what gets in your way in the engine compartment and under the hood. Down each side across the front of the support. Now places like the upper reaches of the body behind the innerfenders and in front of the radiator support had no paint with splattered overspray. Now quickly spray under each fender with about two good wide swipes. Now step to the front and quickly spray the area inside the grille opening on each side at the grille mounts, not trying to get any full coverage in the upper reaches. Remember you dont give a rats a--, you are just trying to make it to the next break. So yes there is some overspray on the frontal area of the support, but it is incidental to the blackout of the grille area.
