According to the Judging Guide, the 72 small block should have exhaust manifolds 3932461 for both the left and right side. Does this mean that two 3932461's both with "RH" casting letters are acceptable for the right and left side? In addition, I have one manifold with the casting number of 3832461. The 8 should be a 9, but it is unmistakably an 8. Are there any instances of mis-cast manifolds showing up with 3832461 numbers? Thanks for you help as always. Gary 21316

Re: 72 Exhaust manifold numbers
Gary-----
I doubt that GM ever made a 3932461 manifold with a "lh" designation. In fact, if your manifold has a "rh" designation on it, I expect that is an anachronism which dates back to 68-69 when the 3932461 manifold was used on right side applications only. For 1972, the 3932461 manifold was used on both sides, and, in any event, is a manifold that is not, in any way, side-specific. I really doubt that GM designated certain 3932461 manifolds as "lh" and certain ones as "rh". But, as i say, the "rh" designation might have remained on the molds.
As far as a manifold that is seen with a "3832461" casting number, I really doubt it. That's because these numbers were, essentially, part of the molds. If the "3832461" number was inadvertantly used for a particular mold, there would have to be an awful ot of these out there-----GM didn't have an infinite number of molds. I will say that, with respect to casting numbers, it can often be EXTREMELY difficult to distinguish a "9" from an "8" and vice-versa. I've seen many "9s" that I could have sworn were an "8" if I didn't know better. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 72 Exhaust manifold numbers
Joe, thanks as always for your insight. I have VERY carefully examined this manifold and compared it to the othr 3932461 manifold. There is absolutely no doubt that this is an 8 instead of a 9. I cleaned it carefully using a nylon scrubber and if it is a 9 I will buy someone a steak dinner.
I have talked on the phone with two others who say that this practice of two "RH" manifolds being on a 72 is quite normal and expected.
