The clutch return spring on my 70 SB is incorrect. The catalog shows a return spring going from the cross shaft to the firewall. The cross shaft has three or four places where a spring can be attached and I don't see any attachment point on the firewall. Can someone tell me the correct installation? Thanks.

There are a total of three springs involved in the clutch actuation mechanism.
First, there are two identical springs used for the clutch return. Each of the springs attaches on one end to the two side-by-side eyelets near the center of the clutch actuation rod (the one that goes between the cross shaft and the clutch fork). The other end of one of the springs attaches at the hole in the cross shaft lower lever just above where the actuator rod attaches. The other end of the other spring attaches to the clutch fork at the small rectangular hole just next to where the actuator rod attaches. These springs are still available from GM and are GM #3784619. They are 3" long, free length.
There is also another spring which is called the clutch pedal return spring. This spring attaches at one end at the hole on the cross shaft upper lever, just above where the pedal rod attaches. On the other end it attaches, as I recall, to the steering column bracket on the firewall. This spring is also still available from GM and is GM #3921656.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Thanks Joe. I think the first springs you talk about are used to keep the linkage from rattling. I thought from the picture I have that the clutch return spring attaches to the "upper ear" of the cross shaft. Now all I have to do is find the firewall side location.- Top

The firewall attachment point for the pedal return spring is a hole in the bracket that supports the steering column. This bracket has an extension which extends to the left (driver's) side. At the end of the extension is a hole which serves as the attachment point for the spring.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
