C2 - '65 Carter AFB - what is this fitting for?

    Hello,
What's this fitting for on my 65 Carter AFB? (see link). Its installed on a 327/300 setup w/power brakes, no AC, No power steering. I just noticed it when looking at these pictures. My knowledge of carburetors is limited (ok very limited) so please be patient. I have the dual snorkel filter housing and I didn't see a vaccum fitting on it or anywhere else.

    Thanks in advance,
    Brian

that is were the hose from the choke system goes. a hose goes from there to the tube that passes thru the exhaust manifold that supplies heat to the choke .this allows only clean air into the choke unit where before the choke sucked dirty air and plugged the choke system

      Clem,
Isn't that the choke assembly right there - the choke thermostat and all? Where might I find the other fitting for this connection?

Thanks - your experience is greatly appreciated.

      Brian

p.s. I know there are mounds of books for Holleys and Rochester carbs... can you recommend anything for Carter carbs?

you choke heat tube go into the exhaust manifold where it picks ups heat but to do this the other end of the tube in the manifold must suck air from some where. there should be a tube coming out of the exhaust manifold opposite of were the choke tube goes in and there is where the hose from your carb fitting attaches to.

                P.S.

David Emanuel wrote a GREAT book about Carters. It's available through the NCRS Bookstore.

                  Re: P.P.S.

The exhaust manifold has a tube through it. Exhaust gases heat the air inside the tube. A hose conducts filtered air through the mystery fitting to the bottom of a bracket under the manifold that connects to the tube inside the manifold. (choke stove). A TBW pipe takes the heated air to the center brass inlet of the choke cover and a vacuum passage inside the carburetor draws this heated air over a bimetallic spring in the choke that releases it's tension on the choke butterfly as it gets hotter. The primaries then have unrestricted air flow.

A very simple but excellent and reliable system PROVIDED the tube isn't burned inside the manifold. Here's an excellent place for stainless steel. If a hole is burned in the stove, exhaust gases and hydrocarbon particulates are drawn into the choke assembly and carburetor with unpleasant results.

                  Dale.

                        Found it!
"clean air tube" - "Tube from beneath exhaust manifold to top of engine near valve cover; rubber hose connects from tube to carburetor air horn or air cleaner."
