    Texaco coolant

I picked up a couple gallons of a Texaco Haviland(sp?) brand 5-year Extended Life coolant that claims it dissipates heat better than water. With conventional coolants (which don't cool as well as water), it is usually recommended keeping the percentage of coolant-to-water to no more than 50% to retain the cooling capability. This is a tradeoff with its corrosion resistance.

This Texaco stuff claims to actually increase the boil-over point as the percentage of coolant in your cooling system increases.

Does anyone have any experience with this product or know anything about it? It seems like it might help my summer overheating problems. It's a bright orange color as compared to the traditional green!

What you bought is Dexcool. Like conventional antifreeze it is ethylene glycol based. I haven't read the label recently, but it won't keep your car any cooler than conventional antifreeze. Dexcool's superiority is derived from its organic corrosion inhibitor package.

I use it in ALL my cars, but before installing it you should thoroughly flush the system to remove all traces of the original coolant.

Texaco does not support the long-life 5 year 150K mile coolant change interval in older cars that have ever had conventional coolant. I still change all my cars every two years, but with Dexcool there is better corrosion protection without all the deposit buildup.

You can find out more at the Texaco web site.
