    66 Transmission re-install

I just had some Jewel Blue mixed up this week in a satin gloss for my 61 interior, so I happen to have the numbers at my fingertips:

    Dupont: 4143-L R-M: A-1396 Ditzler: 12398

    66 Transmission re-install

Pulled my tranny to have new syncro's installed. Have put everything back except my propeller shaft. Did not mark which end was front or back when I pulled it. Now I notice that one end has a raised small plate and am wondering is there a front and back to this. I looked in my service manual and assembly manual and could not determine. In the olden days with the big Chevy's, you just disconnected, pushed it back, and let it hang. Not with this car! This is probably a dumb request, but I don't need another "learning experience". Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Actually, you could have left it in the car. I usually disconnect the front, tape the rollers on, and let it rest on a rag - but that's for next time. The plate is a balance weight. Mine is on the front, but I don't think it matters. The back end should be the end with the paint stripe on it, which should align with the paint stripe on the pinion flange - for balance. - Dave...PS Let me know if the paint stripe is on the end with the weight. I'm curious.

Look carefully for traces of a dark green or blue paint spot. That is the rear. Otherwise you have four possible possitions. If you install it and have no vibrations, it should be OK. if not you may need to experiment a little. Weights could be on either or both ends.

I got everything back together and it seems to run ok. Tough to tell though since I've got side pipes and I was driving pretty slow since there's snow all around, luckily we've had a break in the weather and the road are just about dry. I'm putting it away for the winter, so I'll worry about it next year. Thanks for your help. Oh, by the way, I did a frame on restoration last year which included sand blasting the drive and half shafts.Don't remember if there was paint on the end. I noticed that that was mentioned in The Complete Corvette Restoration Guide which I bought prior to starting. Unfortunately the book means alot more to me now that I'm pretty close to broke! I mean finished. Thanks again for your help.
