With due care you can do lacquer in a garage or outside because it "flashes" very quickly and is easy to fix defects by sanding and blending. This is not the case with enamels. Enamels take longer to flash and it is much more difficult to fix defects, so it has to go on right the first time in a very clean environment.

Modern enamels are less forgiving, but more durable, and less labor intensive. They are more capital intensive since it takes a good downdraft booth to do a quality job.

Acrylic Lacquer is not only original on most vintage Corvettes, but it is easy for the amateur restorer to work with and opens the possiblity of doing our own painting.

Don't need a paint booth.....

for laquer. New spay gun technology eliminates over spray, just wash the floor keep it a little damp to prevent dust from flying around. You're going to spray extra coats for the purpose of color sanding. Any imperfections will be gone after the sanding process. The shops, depending on the price of the paint job, will eliminate sanding, clean environment, no runs, just rub and buff.

Urethane is a different story. Haven't tried it, don't plan on trying it. That is nasty stuff if it gets into your lungs. Hope all your affairs are in order if Urethane does find its way into your lungs. To spray that stuff, you need a self contained oxygen supply, booth, and a system to capture any over spray/fumes.
