    Cavity!...Fill It?

On the midyear cowl, along the lower edge of the windshield, is the cavity where the flange of the stainless moulding locks into the retaining clips. This is a huge reservoir for water to be trapped. I think (?), that GM, in their infinite wisdom, did not provide any drainage for this cavity, nor did they specify any kind of filler/caulking ( I see no provision for such, in the 1965 AIM). I filled the "trench" with "strip caulk", but this made lower moulding installation impossible, so I removed it and installed the moulding.

I do not see any way to drain this area, unless, of course, I don't mind having running water under the dash.

Any ideas? Did I miss something in the AIM?

    Joe -

Correct - there is no provision for drainage of this area (which is why it's frequently a "rust victim"). The 1963 Shop Manual (and the 1965 Supplement) show the sealer application in this area prior to installing the windshield, and the sealer applications prior to installing the reveal moldings.

I use a seam sealer and fill the channel up. When the moulding is applied it will squeeze out. Just clean it up afterwards.

What kind of seam sealer do you use?
