Just rebuilt 2626 and 2627 245hp carters. They were leaking fuel and running rich. The old valves and accel pumps had deteriorated. The leaks have stopped but now the engine starts quickly but only runs for a second or two. It took a few hours for the new accel pump leathers to swell and actually work (well the front still takes quite a few pumps to get it to squirt). I checked the float bowls and the fuel level is just below the screw holes. Seems like a fuel starvation problem. Have not checked the fuel pump pressure yet but the engine ran half decent prior to the rebuild so I think the pump is OK. Also how important is the vacuum piston spring? It was not present in either carb on initial teardown. If needed, were can I get a pair of these? Thanks, Ken

Re: 58 wcfb questions
Kenneth,
Sounds like the idle passages are clogged by the way you describe "running for a second or two." I'm going to assume that the ballast resistor is operating and not broken. The rebuild WCFB would include a throughly cleaned (tanked) main body and air blown dry. There should be no question all passages are clean and a lot of time is spend achieving this. As well as a lot of time adjusting the throttle plates to close completely in the throttle body. This can be only achieved with the throttle body removed from the main body. This latter process will only assure idle quality.
The power piston return spring is important! Think in terms of "is Carter going to pay for parts that aren't needed X thousands of carburetors!" At sometime this spring was removed, possibly possibly someone's attempt to get the system to run leaner. Without the spring, the power circuit can not come on. Must have been a real thrill trying to accelerate out of a "close situation" with this system. Regards,- Top
