When you say "20 minutes idle is a long time", you bring me back to my original question: "are these engines, in ORIGINAL configuration, capable of idling indefinately,IN PLACE, and the temp. stabilizes somewhere between 180 and boilover".
The fan blade is about 1/2 in and 1/2 out of the shroud. The only shroud seal is on the bottom, between the engine cradle and the bottom trailing edge of the shroud. As I understand it, later models used some additional seals, but in '65, just the bottom seal was used. Anyway, the rad is well mated to the shroud, and any small gaps are probably insignificant.
