It did sell to Proteam. Looks like they got a deal at $100,000.

Here is a link for the complete results...'53 Vette is lot number 237.

        Nope.

I was there. Terry himself bought it at $170,000. It's not in the list of Mecum auction results - the one listed there is a different car.

I believe there were only 5 or 6 people who ever actively bid on it. I was a little underwhelmed with the interest in the car, actually.

See the link below for the car.

Patrick - I was there too...I think Dana Mecum himself bid $140K....probably just to stir interest.....Craig

Patrick, Did you notice that this car had run out of gas and had to be jump started from its parking spot. The guy jump starting the 6 volt system laid his 12 volt jump box across the fender without any protection. I was amazed.

              Brian,

Nope. I was too busy standing next to Richard Petty (I'm not kidding - I was right next to the elevated platform).

Saw both. The Repop looked pretty haggard.

                      Or What.

ProTeam paid $170k directly to the charity, and got a "free" car in return. Actually, only $50k is tax deductible, as the car had an appraisal at $120k.

So, the charity gets $170k, ProTeam gets a $50k tax deduction AND still can sell the car, and the guys who restored it for allegedly $160k (Chip's numbers) lose their shirt. Whatever. When it went so low, I thought that next time Chip should just give the money and cut out the middleman. Standing so close, and watching Chip's face, I sincerely think he believed it would bring well over $200k and was very disappointed with it.

I don't think ProTeam's record is any better now than 20 years ago, FWIW. But, buying a car like this with "proceeds to charity" sure helps his image with a lot of people.

And please, DON'T USE ONLY CAPS AS IT'S REALLY ANNOYING TO THE REST OF US. THANKS!

                          Bill -

Not a "rest of us" thing; lower-case letters are the common Internet protocol everywhere - caps are considered "shouting", and are harder to read.

                              Bill,

No offense taken. Believe it or not, the "all caps" request used to be on the initial entry page of the Discussion Board. I'm not sure when John removed it, as I skip by that page most of the time.
