My original 61, with 97,000 miles has an original 935 block and was built about the end of June 1961 (#9967). It also has some of the original carpeting left over the drive shaft hump with the olive green tint. Interesting....

Re: 1964 Wheels- Painted?
Dan-Hold up having you friend paint those wheels black!I don't have my Noland Adams book handy but i believe in 63 if you didn't order whitewalls, notice i did'nt say "Whitewall delete",the wheels were body color in some cases.I don't know for sure on 64's but if it's an early 64 i would think it's possible.Regards,Lou- Top

Re: 1964 Wheels- Painted?
You're right on the '63's, Lou -- Eric Gill did a section (Resorer Vol 7 #3) on '63 steel wheels painted body color if blackwalls were ordered,(or more precisely, whitewalls NOT ordered), and he has photographic proof. The article shows Commander Marsden J.Perry taking delivery of his new Z06 #8956 with white rims. As for late '63's or early '64's, others will have to respond.- Top

Re: 1964 Wheels- Painted?
Dan,
To the best of my understanding, 1964 wheels were painted entirely gloss black and then the the back side was painted flat black. This was typical production for all 1964 cars. However, since there are examples of 1963 wheels of other colors, it could be that a set of non-black wheels found their way on an early 64.
This type of thing can be a touchy area. The burden of proof at an NCRS event would rest with the owner. However, IF the wheels were indeed original, AND you can document this, you have a neat opportunity to further all our understanding about these cars!
Several possible ways to research this would be to contact Kelsey-Hayes to see if they have any data on this, and to contact GM. Another avenue would be to contact the National Automotive Historical Collection of the Detroit Library. They supposedly have an extensive collection of automitove photos donated by the big 3. They may just have a shot of a 64 with non-black wheels. If you can't find their phone number, email me & I'll send you their number as well as the name of the curator.
You'll have to visit the collection in person though. I don't think they'll research their collection for you.
Hope this helps.- Top
