    surface rust

What's the best way to remove surface rust from unpainted parts such as clamps, brackets, etc. Thanks in advance.

    Ray,

Naval Jelly if its very light. Let it sit in muratic acid overnight if its a little deeper or sandblast it if its deeper yet. In any case, you'll want to wash it and get it covered with something or it'll just rust again.

Ospho is also an excellent product and uses phosphoric acid, as does Naval Jelly. Ospho is around $8.00 for a quart bottle.

I used the bench grinder with the wire brush installed on it and locking vice grips to hold the smaller parts. Works great for outside edges, but you'll need to use one of the other techniques mentioned already for inside edges, or else a wire toothbrush. ~Juliet

          Ray,

I prefer to glass bead those small parts and then hit them with lube 6. Rarely have I every had to go back and touch them up again. Of course, you should never use an oil to prevent anything from rusting if you intend to ever paint that part!

          Regards,

          Jon

What is best to use to cover these parts after cleaning to help prevent rusting again without noticibly changing the finish? Thanks again.

              Ray,

All I used was lube 6 and I never had to go back. Lots of folks like to use a clear coating. But, I've found that to crack or turn yellow over time.

              Regards,

              Jon

                Jon,
Can I get lube 6 at any auto parts store? Thanks,
                Ray

                    Ray,

I buy lube 6 by the quart from "Wild Bill" Davis. I prefer to wipe it on rather than spray it on. After a short period of time , I'll wipe the excess off. It's great stuff-industrial strength for sure!
