Techniques for detecting C2 frame rot

How does one best detect rot inside the box and kickup on a C2?

Tapping, rot gauge (magnetic device), etc?

What are the more reliable methods.

    Hi! Mark
I used a sophisticated peice of equipment, an awl. I traveled over 600 miles with trailer in tow to purchase a 1961. The seller stated; "The frame is in very good condition." I inspected the whole car and noticied rust deposits in many locations. The door post were very week and showed signs of heavy rust. These alerts caused me to inspect the frame very close. I looked for weld repairs on the frame and found one on the left kick-up. I used the awl and picked at the right kick-up. There was heavy scaling and with minor effort I pushed the awl through the frame in the right kick-up area. I had the owners permission to use the awl. I passed on the 1961.

Once again, providing that the owner doesn't mind, a small ballpean hammer does the trick for me. Light tapping on metal that is sound produces the characteristic ring. Rotten or rusted metal produces a dull "plink" sound if it is mildly rusted. If you can poke a screwdriver or awl through thoroughly rotten metal, it produces almost a wooden sound.

Thanks for the responses, Ray and Gary.

I use my eyes and then a small brass hammer to listen for that "sound". The awl idea beats the usual screwdriver.
