    Hard starting C2

Ever since I removed the engine from my '66 L79 to do some maintenence, I've had a hard time starting it. While I had the engine out, I removed the oil pan, valve covers, timing cover, intake manifold, carb, fuel pump and exhaust manifolds and replaced all the gaskets. I did a minor rebuild of the original stock Holley carb and replaced the original fuel pump (it started leaking when I re-installed it)with a non-original replacement. I will re-build the original this winter. Prior to all the work, the engine always started right up, but ever since, I have to crank it 10-12 times before it catches. Once it starts, it runs fine. It will start up again immediately if I don't let it sit more than a few hours. If I let it sit overnight, it starts hard again. I found that if I pump the gas pedal several times, crank the engine, pump the pedal a few more times, it starts easier. I think that the float bowl is draining when it sits, so little or no fuel can get in the engine until I crank the engine, to pump fuel. Has anyone else had this problem and how can I cure it?

I think you have pretty much determined what the problem is, now do that carburator again. Before you do that you should confirm that it is or is not getting gas out of the accelerator pump nozzle when cold. It is probably leaking out of the bowls or the accelerator pump is not working. A real Holley that leaks that much out of the bowls, usually dumps a lot of it on the intake manifold and should be very obvious.
