    Re: You know...

The thing that puzzles me most about that commercial is that I doubt that no more than 1-percent of the U.S. population actually know who Harley Earl is (other than what the commercial says). Or that Harley was a bit more rotund and not quite as "Dick Tracy" as the actor portrays. It's a slick piece...if you know who Harley was.

Next it will be Zora, Bill or Larry

What's next? Ads with Zora for Corvette? Maybe Bill Mitchell or Larry Shinoda? God rest their souls.

Its the dumbest commercial I have ever seen and the print adds are even worse. Aside from the fact that most people do not know Harley Earl or some of the great cars Buick built in the past, who really cares? It seems they are trying to trade on the retro theme without really having the product to back it up. If they could plausibly link one of Harley's creations to a current model, perhaps the ad would make some sense.

What do they show? That thing that Buick sells which is a restyled Aztec.

When I went to the local auto show last winter, I actually felt sorry for the people staffing the Buick display (I guess it could have been worse - they could have been at Olds) where all they had was stodgey, boring cars. Nobody was in the booth. The last interesting car that Buick built was the '94 Riviera which they failed to capitalize on. It seems to have disappeared like the Reatta.

Buick touts its supersharged 240 HP V6. Big deal! You can get a normally aspirated 240 HP V6 in a Honda Accord.

When I was growing up, all my dad (and his dad) would own were Buicks. After buying several of their cars in the 70s and 80s that were nothing more than rebadged cars from other divisions, he gave up on Buick and GM products all together. In the last ten years he has owned an Acura, Nissan and three Hondas. His current car is an Accord.

Its pathetic! GM spends more on advertising than any other company and these ads are the best that Buick can do - trying to trade on past glories. They would be better off spending the money on product.

I think if Harley saw what Buick builds today, he would want nothing to do with it.

Well, at least Buick's agency is trying to be creative. The actor in the commercials just doesn't come across right, if you're familiar with Harley Earl. He should be older and definitely taller and more robust.

Maybe they hope that people will go to a Buick dealer and ask: Who is Harley Earl? I wonder what percent of Buick salesmen know the answer.

As and aside, I think I see more Cadillac commercials on TV than all other marques combined, and I'm still flabbergasted that they use Led Zep. as the background music.

Anyone see the commercial with the C5 getting it's door torn off by a bus? Hilarious!

More like .000001% - someone at the agency is on some REALLY good stuff!

Duke, are you sure that bus wasn't a Buick?

Looked under my sister-in-laws Buick (88 Regal I think) to see if anything was broke because of noise coming from the rear of the car. Was surprised to see a transverse fiberglass spring for the rear suspension.

                    Jim -

Millions of 'em out there - all the GM FWD mid-size cars have had composite rear springs since the early 80's (Lumina, Grand Prix, Regal, etc.).
