    C1 shifter ball

I just ordered and received a shifter ball from CC. The finish is very dull. Should it be glossy? If yes, has anyone tried to polish it? The original is glossy and yellowed. Any feedback on this subject would be appreciated. Thanks, Peter

    Hey Peter,

I just got one too and mine is dull as well.

All we have to do is drive our cars around for the next 40 years and then I bet they will be glossy!

    Mark!

Peter, I had a CC repro until I aquired a load of NOS parts with a basket case a couple of years ago. The Nos shifter ball differs from the NOS one in several areas: The Repro ball has a metal insert which is threaded to attach to the shifter. The repro ball has a very pronounced casting line around the ball. The repro ball is a much flatter finish than the NOS GM one. This is not to say that that the GM ball is glossy, because it is not, but it is more of a satin look Vs. the flat finish of the Repro.

Like you my original knob was very glossy, but was yellowed and full of small cracks, and the threads were stripped out. I do not know if the original was glossy or not from the factory, or wether it was polished from use. The Nos GM ball That I have now was a circa 1969 ball and the material may well have been changed. I find it unlikely that the ball would have been polished from use, as the gloss seems to be uniform, even extending to the area under the ball adjacent to the shifter. If I was a betting man, I would say that the original was probably made of a different material like Celluloid which had a high gloss.
I have noticed the same difference in the original door opening knobs between repro, 1969 NOS and the originals.

          John,
Could I bleach my original shifter ball to remove the yellowed finish ? Maybe buff it with jewellers rouge. The threads are very good. I'm not very impressed with the repro.

Peter If you look at an original and a repro closely you will see that the numbers on the repro are larger and different,The original is treaded in-to the plastic. For many years haveing many cars haveing yellow nobs and crazing I use Acetone, first rubbing hard to get the crazing and yellow out, and with a new White soft rag wetting the rag GOOD you then wipe fast before the acetone would dry and that gives them the glossy look your looking for.I'll buy the original any day to have the numbers right if its not cracked then a repro. Many people wont believe me , but what ever!

Roy,I will try the acetone on a spare original yellowed door knob. I think they are made from the same material. I will let you know how it turns out.

I dont think a C1 shifter ball has numbers on it?? Peter
