C2 - Cylinder Head Installation Problem

Last weekend I was going to install a slightly used set of World Products S/R Torquer heads (2000 miles on them, with new valve seals), that I bought off ebay, on the 68 327 in my 66 convertible. I started on the drivers side, laid down the new fel pro gasket, and set the head down. I first installed the 8 short bolts (lightly snugging them down), and noticed the opposite side of the head (along the lifter valley) had pulled up off the gasket, about 0.050" (another gasget thickness). I was surprised at this, so I pulled the head, removed the gasket, and set it against the block. I was able to rock it by putting my hands on opposite corners (of opposite ends). At first, I thought I had a warped head, but both of them rock like this, on both sides, but more so on the drivers side. With one end tight against the block, I could slip a 0.006" feeler gauge under the opposite corner (passenger side), and 0.009" on the other head (drivers side). Setting the two heads against each other, I get no rocking at all. I went back and looked at the gaskets from the heads I removed, and some spots were all sooty (like it wasnt sealing the combustion chamber) and I remember the gasket being wet when I removed it (coolant leak). It looks like I need to have the deck surface shaved, but what would cause it to get so far out of wack? Also, while its apart it probably ought to be bored (its 0.010" over bored now, thats whats stamped on the tops of the pistons), maybe 0.030"? Besides this, with the cost of rebuilding the rods, and machining the crank, would I be better off buying a rebuilt short block, since I'm not concerned with numbers matching anyways? I'm looking for the cheapest way to get my car back on the road, since I'm now at the University of Michigan, I don't have much money to spend on it. Thanks in advance, Dan

make sure that you are not bottoming out the holes in the heads on the dowel pins in the block. if you are just tap the dowels in farther.

I checked the dowel pins, the holes in the head are plenty deep. I don't think thats the problem, but I'll check it again the next time I'm home. They look like origionals, the block has never been decked as far as I can tell. Thanks!

The only way you're going to know what's out of whack is to take measurements with a machinists straight edge and feeler gauges. It sounds like the engine has suffered from some serious overheating sometime in its life. If you're looking for a reliable and inexpensive replacement shortblock, you'll be well off with one of the Goodwrench engines. For around $1,200 you'll have a completely fresh shortblock. It's hard to overhaul an engine (block boring, decking, cam bearings, freeze plugs, rods reconditioned, new pistons, bearings, gaskets...) for less than that plus you don't have to wait for a month or two for your parts to come back from the machinist after he's through giving them a wall job.
