Hello, I have a 63 coupe that jerks the stering wheel out of your hand and pulls right when braking. Did brakes and turned rotors, new bearings, and alignment but problem persists, does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 63 pulls when braking
Not sure what operations are included in "did brakes", but a leaking wheel cylinder that has soaked a lining is certainly a possibility. The hoses are suspect if they are of unknown age, and did you disassemble, clean, and lubricate the self-adjusters. Also, check that the parking brake cables are free.

Make sure that everything is adjusted
the same - take it out of the garage, back it down the street 5 or 6 times and slam on the brakes; in other words, let the self-adjusters do there job. If that doesn't correct it, look for leaking wheel cylinders, cylinders not getting fluid, etc.- Top

"Did brakes and turned rotors"
Well, here's the obvious question. Did you turn rotors or drums? If somebody's retrofitted disc brakes on your 63 then the possible problems are completely different. Looks like from the previous responses that most everybody's assumed that you really meant "drums". If that's correct what exactly did you mean by "did brakes". Whether or not the wheel cyl's were done and done properly could make a difference, as well as whether they were bled properly. Also, way back when, it was thought that new brake shoes should be "arched" to more closely match the contour of the drum when the drums were turned oversize one or more times. The drums having a different diameter from one side to the other can cause the car to pull one way or the other, especially until the new brake shoes wear to fit the contour. Not having the two sides adjusted equally can cause the same problem. As somebody else mentioned, the rubber hoses can also cause all kinds of problems from brakes pulling to not realeasing.- Top

Re: 63 pulls when braking
I have another possibility for you. My 63 also pulled to the right when breaking. I just replaced the master cylinder. In doing so I changed all the old break fluid and bled the system until the new fluid ran clear. The old fluid look dark brown. Now the car stops straight.- Top
