Is the front crossmember on a 1961 painted gloss black or is it suppose to be painted the same as the frame? Thanks for the help

Joe,
The front crossmember was painted before it was mated to the frame, but I belive the gloss was about the same. The end result however makes the point moot as the entire chassis was painted with the same low grade gloss paint at the end of assemblly, just before body drop.

For what it is worth. I know that John Hinckley and Dale Pearman wrote a book on chassis restoration. What little I know about them I have to believe it is real accurate and thorough. I am waiting for my book!

The totally assembled front crossmember (less grease fittings) was delivered from Detroit Gear & Axle to St. Louis painted medium gloss black. The high gloss asphaltic mastic black out was applied at St. Louis to the completed chassis.
