Had an earlier thread regarding the rear axle assembly on my 58 which finally brings me to this one. Realize that I don't know any history on the car(did check with my sheriffs office to see if it was stolen) except that lots of parts were wrapped in newspaper dated 1989. It has essentially been residing in boxes and probably several years prior to 1989. She will be revived (I mean restored) and I do need help! Everything is going great as I am restoring the running chassis except for the rear axle assembly. I have now totally removed the axle assembly, pulled the axles, cutoff some unknown rubber bumper stops mounted on the top side of the axle assembly, removed the gear case, and semi-cleaned it all up. I know the following:
1-axles measure 28 5/8" and 30 1/8" (end of shaft to outside edge of flange.
2-drain plug is located on the rightmost 1/3 of the casing viewing from the rear
3-back cover has a badly repaired hole (thought it was chunk of dirt) and gears look BRAND NEW.
4-casting number on nonposi case is 3725899 and dated B44 the other side is unreadable
5-37 tooth ring gear 1KN GM37355380 ll 37 2 64(the 6 is very,very small) 2-1
Based on my limited references I don't know what I have here? Do I have a corvette case and passenger axle? Is that possible and would it work? Like spring perch angles/width/etc? Anyone Help!
