    C1 CHASSIS STENCIL

I received a 1961 chassis detailing kit and it calls for the frame stencil to be painted red. I thought I have seen the frame stenciled in white? Thanks, Joe

    Joe,
My 60 still had the original stencil showing and it was in fact red.
I think that midyear and shark cars had a white stencil.

      Joe,
The research for my '56 turned up red. My two previous '65s and '74 were white.

C1 frame stencils were blacked out. They weren't visible when the car was new.

Always wondered why anyone CARED about stencils...

Since all the literature I have ever seen describes chassis blackout, which, among other things, was SUPPOSED to obliterate the chassis stencil. I suppose if the chassis line guy was having a bad day it might not be completely hidden, but then wouldn't QC catch it later on the line?

Quality Control would come closer to catching a VISIBLE stencil. The manufacturing standard was for all inspection marks, identification marks, and bright components such as brake and fuel lines to be black-out painted with the asphaltic mastic.

Blacked out or not my original chassis stencil on my 1960 was difficult to read from age not paint over, but it was definitely red.

                Dale:
If that's the case, why are our judging manuals including the frame markings in the judging?

                  I suspect they need revision.

Most all C1 stencils were red. Toward the end of 1962 production they went white.
