    1977 exhaust

I just purchased a 1977 with 70,000 orig. one owner miles. In the past 8 years, it has only been started and idled in his garage for a short period of time. I replaced the plug wires, plugs and all related items. When I run it, I get a lot of gray smoke out of the exhaust. I even put a rag over the tail pipe and it turned black in 8 seconds. Can this just be carbon build up that can be remedied by giving it a good hard drive? Also, after sitting so long, it lost it's brakes, no pedal. The front well of the MS was empty, no fluid leaks anywhere, I'll pressure bleed the brakes, but where did the fluid go?

John - I suspect you have a carburetor problem with the Rochester on your 77. It sounds as if the choke is sticking causing too much enrichment of the mixture into the engine. I would suggest getting a can of carb or brake clean and thoroughly going over the inside and outside of the carb to free any sticking linkages etc. I personally like using brake clean better for this as it evaporates so quickly and leaves no residue. On your brakes, it sounds like you are suffering from the age old problem of corrosion in the bores of the calipers, sooner or later it gets almost every older vette, unless you are meticulous about fluid changes on a frequent basis. Sitting also causes the seals to loose their elasticity. While it's possible you MAY get by with a seal replacement, you really need to get a quality set of stainless steel calipers, if your car doesn't already have them. If it does, you need a caliper rebuild with new seals. The newer Oring style from Vette Brakes are supposedly better for cars that sit a lot. I would also make sure you send your original calipers in for rebuilding versus exchange if you ever intend to judge the car, and, if so, also ask for the original style black paint and no grinding or stamping of work on the caliper visible surfaces....VB will do that for an additional $10 per caliper. Best of luck!....Craig
