    C1 Repo tires

I wanted a flatter look in my trunk so I decided to purchase a repro tire from Cokers. Since my car originally came with Firestone Deluxe Champions, my choice was simple. Well, I'm now on my third tire with them! The first two had some serious sidewall damage. The last one I received was coated with a white film that I've been unable to get off. This is after a dozen washings with about every product I could think of. When I called them, they told me to scrub the tire down with 400 grit sand paper and simple green. "Hum". Has anyone else experience such a problem with tires or am I just unlucky? I'm thinking, it's just poor quality control on their part! Of course, they have been great in taking them back, but I'll soon have more in shipping than I paid for the tire.

The 62 with the powdered donut on the back,

I bought a set of the same tires for my 61 project about 4 years ago. They have been mounted and are holding up the suspension. They look great and have had no problems. Hope your situation gets corrected.

I have excellent results using a BRASS WHITEWALL TIRE BRUSH.I also use bleech-white, with the brush. An older gentleman, suggested a brass brush because thats what they used in the 50's. TRY IT YOU WILL LIKE IT

The closer I examined the tire the more it looked like a coating of wax. However, I was still unable to remove the film. I must have srubed and washed that tire twenty times with no success. Then my wife decided to throw out the suggestion of using an avon product called "skin so soft." I must admit ,I chucked at the idea. Hey, you wouldn't believe how great it worked! "Figure it out!" It actually smoothed the tire out and gave it a uniform color. Not too dull and not too shiny. This was accomplished by simply wetting a tee-shirt with the product and wiping it down. No rubbing at all! Of course my car smells like a french gal, if you know what I mean! Avon has now become a part of my detailing kit.

        Regards,

        Jon

This product is also used as a insect repellant for people and also used on horses to keep the flies off.

New tires typically have a coating of mold release on them. Initially it may not be visible, but eventually it gets dirty and turns the tire brown. Mold release cannot be removed with any kind of soap product.

The best thing I have found is mineral spirits. Since I usually order my tires from the various mail order dealers and have the tires delivered to my house I always give them a careful inspection and then spray them down with paint thinner, scrub with an old paint brush, and wipe them down before the paint thinner dries. It usually take two applications to get the tire clean, and I do both sides.
