'58 smoke in the cabin

Apparently fried the ignition switch and the brown wire coming off the switch that goes on into the fire wall and connects to a resistor plate against the fire wall. That resistor plate was just hanging there loose. Could this have caused the short resulting in the fry out??

If you follow the path of the burned wire from the switch you should be able to find the point if the short ar the area where the insulation changes from burned to unburned.

If the brown wire made contact with a ground near the ballister Yes!!!!!!

Roy-found no contact anywhere...just the resistor plate the connects these wires to the fire wall was hanging there loose-I don't know, I'm just thinking that perhaps that one finding may have been the culprit. Who knows, I'll replace the ignition switch/replace the wires/tighten up that plate and see what happens.

Terry just had a thought that the wiper brown wire also connects at the same location on the resister 12V side. May be the wiper is shorting inside could couse the problem by being grounded inside. Check it out first and also the key switch gets it power from the starter solenoid check it out too.

I would put a fuse in off the starter before you get there. I did that in my 60. There was an article on that in an NCRS archive. That happened to me. Mouse chewed thru a wire.
