    C2 '66 Crayola Number

Just removed the gas tank from my '66 and found a Tank Sticker (Sorry, but with all the latest - I couldn't help myself.)
But I did find a number scribed on the right rear (pass) side of the coupe's rear panel. AA 361 X.
Can anyone tell me what it means?
    Thanks,
    Ronnie

its probably the job # for that day's production at the factory. Usually it was between 1 and 500. They have that number on the back so as it goes down the assembly line the workers can see what options go with each particular car.

That's the Body Shop "job number"; you should find the same number on the engine compartment side of the passenger-side toe pan, up behind the splash shield - it's not directly related to the car's VIN, which wasn't assigned until after the Paint Shop.

AM I understsnding these posts correctly? The number on the rear of the boby is the PRODUCTION LINE job number,1 to 500, and found hand written on the TANK STICKER and the number on the front of the body is the BODY SHOP job number?
And the two are not related?

            Ronnie:

According to Noland's book, there were slight variations in the placement of these job numbers, depending on whether they were St Loo or Smith bodies. The locations common to both were: 1. Rear bulkhead, 2. Lower right footwell on engine side and 3. On inner doors, under door trim panels. Some other spots, not common to both, include: 1. Floorpan under radio 2. Left side dash support ("Z bar") near speedo 3. Left rear corner of deck (removed prior to painting).
The numbers went from 1-500, then 499-1. The letters in the code are related to options.

Interesting, Joe --- On my '65 tanker, I have the job # only on the doors, under the inner panel. Only "N03" written on the rear bulkhead, front RH floorpan and trans tunnel (radio side). On some '66 tankers, owners have reported both NO3 AND a job #.

                Wayne:

I am not an expert on this, but according to what I have seen, it sounds like yours is a St. Louis body. If so, then the job number probably also appeared on the left rear deck corner, and was removed in prep for painting.
My AOSmith bodied 1965 roadster has it on the z-bar behind the speedo, on the rear bulkhead, and on the right footwell. The job number is "396"--I only wish that this had something to do with engine displacement. Apparently lots of variation between STL/AOS.

                  Wayne:

As you probably know, the number on the right footwell was either partially or completely covered over by the blackout in the engine bay. Mine is partially visible. Yours is probably completely covered.

                    Rick -

On a St. Louis body, the number on the rear of the bulkhead (and on the engine side of the pass. side toe pan) is the Body Shop job number, which is not directly related either to the VIN number or the Final Assembly sequence number; you will usually find the Final Assembly sequence number written on the back of the door trim panels, cluster, and other Final Assembly-installed parts. The Final Assembly sequence number came off the printed Broadcast Copy, and almost none of those have ever been seen; the plant was very effective in "de-papering" the car at the end of the line. An article covering "all the numbers" and the elusive Broadcast Copy will be in either the Winter or Spring issue of the "Restorer".
