Late '58 Tuxedo Black - Judging

I have a very late '58 that appears to have been a black car verses charcoal. I would like to paint it original verses making it a color get points. What's the current judging position on late '58s being tuxedo black verses charcoal?

    Thanks,

    Ted

Ask the Team Leader - In Writing - and

give him a stamped, self-addressed envelope for his reply. But please give him the actual serial #, not "late".

I wrote the artical that Noland and I discovered about how to tell the color of any Corvette 58-62 years ago before NCRS new of it. In the trunk area behind the card board cover R/S is were you will find the original color of your vett. Before I wrote it NCRS din't recognize black 58's.If it does say black ,then you have documentation, no matter what your serial # is.

Thanks Loren and Roy. The serial number is #9128 and I have used the quarter on the trunk separator panel method and can see "BLA??". I haven't been able to scrape the last two letters due to the power top unit still being in place. So given your responses, if I have photos of the crayon marking I have proof that it is an original "black" '58 vs. charcoal given the serial number shows it was built after July. Correct?

        Thanks again for your help,

No, you have proof that someone at

some time took a grease pencil and wrote 'BLA" and then painted over it; it might have been 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988 or 1998. What you need to do is take these pictures and the VIN # and contact the team leader and ask him to confirm in writing that Black was an available color when this car was being built. Who knows, if it IS original paint, you might be expanding the knowledge base about "WHEN" black started.

BLA even with out the rest , what else starts with BLA? or could it be a (BLANK) in color? I would say %25 of early answers are still out there.

Where exactly in the trunk area is the color ID? Is it adjacent to fuel tank? To the right of the trunk hinge? Is it stamped on something or on a tag/pad? I am having trouble finding it on my Black 59. Thanks. - Kevin

Kevin It's at the right side of the hinge R/S behind the card board. In the trunk area. If a power top vett, then behind the control valves.
