Larry, I have heard that the process like Corvette Central uses where they machine away a slot and boly on a steel tab to replace the original is liked very much by people who have had it done. I t gives the advantage of not having to plate the post if the chrome is still in good shape! If your plating needs to be redone, I have had very good success with Lemon Grove plating in California, and Frankfort Plating in Phila. Lemon grove is more of a production shop, but still does very nice work at a reasonable price, while Frankfort does work that will blow your socks off, but is a little pricey.

      Regards, John McGraw

Apparently it is possible to weld the broken tabs back on, but not just any welding shop is going to be able to do a satisfactory job. The repair method which machines the post and adds a steel tab is a good repair and offers some flexability in the reassembly of the windshield frame. There are advertisers in the Driveline who specialize in chroming die cast metal (potmetal).

I understand the problems with welding and plating the posts. I know I can
find venders in Driveline. Before I send these items off to somebody, I would
like to feel comfortable with the work they do and know I will get them back
in a reasonable amout of time. I would like recommendations from people who
          are satisfied with a vender.

I understand that this is not a forum for advertising. If anybody has a vender that you recommend, please Email me off line.
          Thank you

            Re: C1 Windshield/door posts

I would like some feedback on how important the tabs are to the overall windshield installation and making it secure to the body. I removed the windshield from my 1960 on Sunday and the driver side tab was broken off and was missing. The passenger side tab broke off while I was removing the windshield. If the T-bolts are all in place and the windshield posts are bolted down, is it really critical to have the tabs welded back on (if it can be done successfully) or repaired with CC repair process? The absence of the tab on my driver side did not appear to affect the fit or the stability of the windshield. Any thoughts on this?

              Joe,
When I took mine apart I didn't know the tabs were supposed to be there.
I only learned about them on this forum.
Is something going to fall off without them?

                Purpose of the tabs

Without the tabs, the top of the frame can pull away from the glass when you have your soft top up and tight. The bottom of the frame will indeed stay put, but the side posts and top frame will pivot back at the bases of the side posts.

With a soft top, this can be a biggie, but beyond this, I'm not sure how necessary the tabs are either. But then again, there's a TON about these cars that I don't know!

                  Re: Purpose of the tabs

Seems like once the windshield posts are bolted down with the two studs, this would minimize the chance of them tending to pull back when the soft top is up. GM probably had a good reason to put the tabs there in the first place. But, my soft top has stayed in place when I do put it up for 13 years. I am still looking into a machine shop helping me solve the problem. Thanks for your input.

                    Re: Purpose of the tabs

Good point. I'm getting my information from the Al Knoch dash pad video. The windshield they deal with has broken tabs and he shows how it pulls. Apparently he sometimes gets blamed for this when he does soft top installs.

I'm wondering if the two studs of the post have adequate leverage to do the job completely by themselves. They are so close to the pivot point.
