I have been reading about the restoration of Corvette Grand Sport No.2 ( ex Penske, ex Wintersteen ) and the representative selection of all the various induction systems, wheels, tires etc. that were used on the car during it's racing career. How does NCRS view the restoration of racing Corvettes with known provenances?? Is there a place for these vehicles in the judging system?? Where do these important vehicles fit into the preservation movement.

I have an historic Corvette racer. A 64 that was raced by the famous driver Ed Lowther. You can contact me offline if you'd like. I race in SVRA,HSR and VSCDA. My car is a "Medalion" car with documented history back to before 1972. The problem those of us interested in racing and NCRS type restoration is that to be competive and reliable you need to do some upgrades, like a dry sump. If you want to be competive you won't be correct for NCRS. I just don't like the idea of creating another show vehicle. I love to race , so for now the NCRS restoration is out. There is a group on the west coast(HMSA) that races more NCRS correct cars. But these are not the wheel to wheel agressive racing that we do in the groups I'm in. We race at Daytona, Sebring, Road Atlanta, Mid Ohio, Road America, Watkins Glenn and VIR. Great tracks, This is what Corvette racers are meant to be. Just my opinion. Jerry- Top

A best kept secret is that NCRS has SEVERAL forms of recognition for cars and owners in the spirit of the club's basic motto--restoration and preservation. You do NOT have to create a museum piece out of your classic Corvette in order to join in the 'action' and come out and interact with your fellow NCRS members!
All of the recognition/award categories are described in the NCRS Judging Reference Manual (sometimes called the 'white book'). They run the gammet from full blow museum piece car (both restored and unrestored), basic restored car, active member with 'driver' class Corvette, just about any driver Corvette that wants to come out and 'play' and Corvette with 'unique' history (experimental/styling version or bona fide historic race background).
Obtaining a copy of the NCRS Judging Reference Manual and reviewing the various award/recognition categories can be rewarding for those new to the club. You just might find there's a 'place' for you and your car that you weren't aware of!- Top

Thanks, this has been a helpful link. I am attempting to gather history for 00867S102348, It is an old beat up car that shows the result of heavy thrashing.
The problem occurs when you think about resurrecting the car through rebuild or restoration. How far do you go and what configuration do you use, the factory original or leave exhaust holes, hood holes, etc. If you have an old car that is identified as the COMORADI or Gulf car it is easy. A friend suggested to leave it in primer, perhaps just hauling the old thing around 'as is' would save a lot of money. Meanwhile, I keep looking for local SCCA records etc to give me some direction. Any suggestions?
