    Fuel Additives

    Can anyone recommend a good Lead fuel additive. I have read of a few but don't know which one to trust in my car?

    Don't know what engine you have in your 65, but in my 68 with a 327/350HP having 11:1 compression, I have had no problems using unleaded premium. Have never used additives for the fuel in this car.

      Jack Podell of Fuel Injection fame sells real tetraethyl lead which works just like the original. I don't have his phone no. but he adverts in Hemmings

        If you're experiencing detonation, you can try juggling the timing - such as reducing the initial and increasing centrifugal if the detonation is primarily at low revs.

        If the engine detonates across the range, I believe a better alternative to an additive is to come up with a blend of 100 PON or 110 PON racing gasoline and pump
        premium. As little as a 25 percent blend of the high octane gasoline may eliminate detonation.

          I havent noticed a difference when using any additives in my 62 360 horse. Pump fuel is just fine and here in CA there is a lot of extra stuff in the fuel. Took a tour of a Chevron research facility this weekend and some of their engineers had tested some of the additives and advised against them and that they were somewhat "instable". I would stick to the pump and like duke said add in a little racing fuel if neccesary.

            i see a lot of carbs that have octane booster run thru them and the plating on the zink get ate away causing them to corrode and that is not good. use a mix of race or av gas if you need a higher octane. sunoco is now selling 100 octane unleaded race gas at some stations,check the sunoco web site to find out were.

              Is Sunoco on the west coast at all? I dont think any pump get above 91 out herein CA. But I had heard a couple of 76 stations might have something similar. Are 76 and Sunoco connected at all?

                i think union 76 also has the same 100 octane unleaded gas. go to google and do a search.

                  76 Station at Foxworthy Ave and Almaden Exp. in San Jose, CA has 100LL racing (NASCAR stuff) for $4.50+ a gallon.

                    additives are a waste of time and money. none of them work. if you really want to make yourself some good fuel just go to a paint supply store or any hardware store and get a couple gallons of xylene. mix this with 1/2 tank of gas. this is what i run and you wouldn't believe the difference it makes.

                      I don't consider racing/aviation fuel mixes a practical solution to the problem. Until I go to flat top pistons in a rebuild, I want to be able to drive on long trips in my '65 327/365, subsisting only on available 93 octane. I don't want to carry jugs of racing fuel in the back. Awhile back I retarded the initial timing to 0* by pushing the coil bracket against the firewall. The engine can still ping under load, although it has been running hotter than normal because of a clogged replacement radiator. The situation may improve when I install the DeWitts and try advancing the timing a little.

                      Is it the consensus that additives are of no value?

                        What is the Xylene? Why does it help so much and does it make the fuel unstable at all? Just curious I hadnt heard of this option before.

                          Xylene and Toluene both have very high octane ratings and doping pump premium with either will increase octane rating and can tame detonation.

                          I don't know if there are any bad effects from this as most commercial fuels already have contain moderate concentrations of these two compounds.

                          If you need higher than pump octane and don't want to carry extra avgas or racing gas on a trip, you can always purchase these chemicals locally and add before you refuel to maintain sufficient octane.

                            The only thing I've ever gotten from octane boosters is a redish or rusty color on spark plugs from one of the brands. Personal opinion, total waste of money. I live in Phoenix and, in general, the highest octane I see at the pumps is 91. When it's hot or if I know I'll be doing some spirited motoring, I stop at a 76 station that has the 100 octane unleaded and mix a several gallons of that in with the 91.
