I am in the process of getting my original Convertible Top replaced. Does it make sense to get the date tag? The original tag is long gone. The car is nice local car show type car. It is nearly all restored with most original parts and matching numbers. I don't intend to NCRS but I think I could. Any thoughts?

Re: C2 New Convertible Top
Tag was stiched on, sandwiched between fabric around rear vinyl window. If you drive your car, the tag will flutter in the wind and quickly fatigue and fall off. Those who are serious about competing in factory concours go to lengths to protect/maintain their original tag with a form of plastic clip to hold it intact--flush against top rear material.
Replacement tags can be purchased separately (Paragon catalog) because they become deteriorated and fall off so frequently. Some judges to check closely to see if the tag is actually stitched on vs. a replacement that's 'stuck' into position or glued in place....
Bottom line, if car is to be driven and shown, due the show campaign VERY quickly after installing the new top because trying to maintain the original tag in fresh/new condition in a daily driver or 'weekender' use profile is a labor of love! It's probably more important that you have the rear vinyl properly detailed with mfgr and date code emboss....- Top

If you're talking about the white and red paper tag that was sewn onto the lower edge of the left rear side of the top, I wouldn't consider that tag to be practical for a driven car. First of all, as I say, it's paper. It was never designed to remain on the top. It was put there to caution the original owner about top maintenence and was designed to be thereafter torn off. If it remains on the top and the car is driven in the weather, it will shortly deteriorate.
If it were me, I'd remove the tag, not make a special point to obtain a cover with the tag on it. In fact, my top came with one and I tore it off. I mean, I'm obsessive about some things but not THAT obsessive! In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

That might be worthwhile to garner a few potential future judging points PROVIDED that the embossing service is not too expensive (I don't think that it is too expensive). In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C2 New Convertible Top
Guys, thanks for all your input. It's appreciated by us less informed.
Now I have another question. What color top should replace my old top. Should I stay with a white or change to black. My car is rally Red with Black interior. The original owner once told me he picked white because nobody else had that color. Now I look around and most red Corvette convertibles have white tops.
Since I believe once a new top has been installed, the car is no longer original. It is now a restored Corvette. I guess I should ask which top has better resale value. No, I'm not selling.- Top

"Vinylite" is the trademarked name for the plastic material the window is made out of, and has nothing to do with the supplier who fabricated the top assembly; the top assemblies (frame and cover, built-up and ready to bolt on the car) came from several suppliers over the years, one of which was Findlay Industries (whose name doesn't appear anywhere on it).- Top
