    C-3 Survivor Award

I own a 1969 427/435 Covertible with 16k miles on it. Based on what i know and what I've been able to research, the car is very original. I'd like to have the car judged as a "Survivor" and would like to know where I can get some information on or what member I could talk to about; how the car is judged, specifically what the requirements are, is there a judging manual I could refer to, etc? Any information anyone could give me would be very helpful. Thanks

    Rich,

First and foremost join the NCRS if you have not already done so. The NCRS version of survivor is the Bowtie judging program. The team leader for 68-72 Corvettes is Chuck Berge and he can be reached via email listed on ths NCRS website listing. He will help you determine your chances. If you decide to go for it you will be required to have the car "prequalified" by Chuck at a regional meet so that you can enter the car for Bowtie judging at a National Convention. It is a great award if you think the car is worthy. So called "stars' are given for interior, exterior, chasis and mechanical, one for each totalling four. If you can get all four you can then secure a fifth star by performing several display requirements. Thus the name Five star bowtie. Good Luck.

The term "Survivor" is used by the NCCB, frequently referred to as "Bloomington". A friend and I did his L88 in 1989 or 90 and it was the first L88 done. My memory may be foggy on their requirements, but I believe the car had to be something like 75% original in 3 of 4 categories and there was a recurring question in each category that went something like "is the historical significance sufficient to justify leaving these components in their present condition?" I also believe the car had to complete a road trip of 40 or 50 miles.

I agree 100% with the above advice. First of all you need to join the NCRS (not connected with NCCB) You may very well enjoy doing both certifications if they're still done as they were back then. Generally speaking, I'd say a car that judges well in one organization would do well in the other. The big advantage in the NCRS is the total package of membership, publications, advice, multiple events in different locations, etc.

Rich, I "Survivored" my '74 in '94 and my '80 in '01, got NCRS Four Star Bowtie in 2000 with my '74. Car has to be at least 20yrs old, complete 40+mi "road tour" with the other participants. Car must "pass" 3 out of 4 categories to qualify as a "Survivor"-not as near "in depth" as NCRS Bowtie program. Each area judged(paint, chassis, interior & engine compartment) MUST APPEAR to the judges to be at least 50% or greater to be "original". Judges there basically just "look" and come up with an opinion if each "category" is indeed 50% or more original "appearing". NCRS Bowtie is quite a bit more intense whereas the chassis and engine compartment have to be 80% or greater to receive a "Star" as mentioned earlier for that category. Interior and paint must be "judged" 85% or greater to receive a "Star" for those categories. Since the NCRS Bowtie judging is quite a bit more intense, it takes a good bit longer to judge a car for Bowtie-can be an hour or two or longer. Survivor judging is usually done in less than a halfhour.
