    Your gonna drive me crazy

Being somewhat new to restoration, I'm just surfing through some the postings, concentrating more on the C3's, I just happen to read the C2 posting on what bolts to torque and not to torque before the body drop.......say what???

What bolts not to torque? Now how is someone gonna know that without accidently coming across this?? although someone sometime ago did elude to the fact that the rear spring bolts shouldn't be torqued down until the wheels were on the ground during a spring re-installation.

What else does someone need to know...and not by coming across it accidently.
This group needs an FAQ for stuff like this. It doesn't have to be written by one person, as long as it is sanctioned by others.

Ya, I know, money, time, who's gonna administer it, etc etc. But it sure would be nice for newbies like me that are probably gonna do something stupid that the experienced guys all know and take for granted....gee doc, I undid this bolt and this spring thingy came flying out and cut my finger off....

Steve, You need the Chassis Service Manual by GM which is devoted specifically to your particular year corvette. It goes through all the service procedures for everything. The torque specs (but not the sequence) are also itemized in the AIM. Both are available through NCRS and support this website. ~Juliet

      Steve,

Restoration like anything else has a learning curve.Through your own research in the many books available or the posting of your concerns on this board are the two best ways I know to extend that curve. I have never had a request for information on this board not responded to with either the information needed or the direction to go to find it. I don't think one can ask for more than that.

        Steve:

I agree with Juliet--no matter how "mechanically inclined" you are, you MUST have the right tools to do the job. The AIM, and service manual are ESSENTIAL. If you are looking for a Top Flite restoration, then the TIM&JG is the "bible".

As far as this forum is concerned, you will not find one better. In order to post to the Vetteheads site (a comperable site, which mimics our graphics, layout, and font) you must first pony up a registration fee.

Stick around, and like me, you will quickly appreciate the knowledge and generosity of the folks who contribute to this site.

Your right,I've gotten involved in all other kinds of hobbies, everyone is the same, ,,,you learn a little bit here and there over a period of time.

What is TIM&JG?? I've probably have it but don't recognize the achronym.

                Steve,

One thing that really helps in the corVETTE resoration hobby is a good sense of humour. Sure torque specs, patterns on bolt HEADS and a yellow daub here and a red DOT there are important but it's got to be fun. Don't forget to COMmunicate with fellow enthusiasts and there is no better way to do this than to read between the lines.

                Have a great day

                  Steve:

TIM&JG stands for "Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide", and is available thru this website, under "Publications".
This booklet tells you what the judges will be looking for, if you want to make your project car "Top Flite Ready".

Thanx, just got them the other day. Including the black book- which I don't find very useful. There's not a whole lot of info in there for any particuluar year.

I have tried to post a reply in the Vettehead's Tech Forum, but was unsuccessful--I am able to view the site sucessfully.
                      I'll give it another shot.

Steve, I totally understand your frustration and have experienced it many times myself while restoring my 58 and my son's 72 convertible. Some of the advice that I have gotten makes it sound so simple but only because the other guy probably went through the same thing we are going through once upon a time. To me, these repairs get real simple once you make all the mistakes! I want to just encourage you to keep asking questions on this forum and others until folks start ignoring you. I don't think that will happen! Patience! Patience! Patience! Take a time-out when you get overcome. It will get worse.
