    '58 guage cluster pre-assemble

I'm about to put in the dash pad and I have the guage cluster completely out of the car. I've put in the speedo, tach, Fuel/Temp guages, ignition and lights switches and lighter.

I'm thinking it would be easier to put in the Oil/Amp guage AFTER the cluster is in the car, rather than now. This is because I've already got the oil line on the guage and it didn't leak when I tested it and I don't want to risk redoing it. Am I making an error?

Also, it looks like it will be pretty easy to hook up all the wires, lights and cables AFTER the cluster is in place. Is this correct, or are there some things I should hook up with the cluster in "almost installed" position? Thanks as always!

    Mike,

You can probably hook most of those things up with the cluster installed, but I find it's easier with the cluster almost installed. Some of the upper lights and the speedo cable are almost impossible with the cluster in place. I'd go ahead and install the gauges with the cluster out. The oil gauge isn't that hard to attach the line to with the cluster "almost" in place.

If you still haven't installed the wiper transmissions, put at least the left one in before you install defroster ducts, etc.

if you have the steering column out that would be a plus. you want to make sure all the guages are installed into the dash. if your car came with a radio you need to install the capacitor on the amp guage. your wireing needs to go in place first. this is almost impossible with the steering column in. although i have done it i wouldn't recomend it with the column in. if you just put a new dash pad in you will need to remove the padding where it comes over the lip of the dash around the instrument housing. you will find the the cluster does not want to fit all the way back into the dash. to be able to start the bolts for the dash you will need to have someone push on the guage assembly NOT THE SPEEDO back while you start the bolts. this is a fairly easy jub if you know the tricks. good luck.

        Thanks Ed & Bob!

Ed, are you saying I should install those wiper transmissions? Gee, it's only been a year!

Since the body is still off, I have the luxury of no steering column in the way. Thanks for the tips, guys! Without "the voices of experience," these can be really tough decisions!
