    C3/ 1971 #420 INTERIOR CODE?

Got conflicting info, eckler shows a code 34 l. saddle, and 38 dark saddle for 70/72, others only show dark saddle, kinda looks like a medium! What is a 420 interior code stand for? Also I'm putting back the original radio, do you need to remove the console around the shifter in order to get the gauge bezel out far enough to slide the radio in? is that correct, only way there seems to be enough room to fit the radio! Thanks in advance for your help!!!!!!

    '71 interior code #420

    Larry,

My NCRS Pocket Spec. Guide tells me that code #420 was a Saddle color leather seats. I have removed the gauge bezel to get a radio in and out of my 1969. By removing the screws that go into the dashpad on either side and there are two nuts that are on studs that extend down from the bezel thru the center console thru the bracket underneath. By loosing or removing the nuts, the bezel can be removed and then the radio.

Proper proceedure to R&R the radio chassis in your '71 is given in the Chassis Service Manual. If you don't follow the step-by-step instructions and obey the 'caution' notes, I can almost guarantee you that you'll wind up breaking the center cluster bezel at it's designed-in weak points.

Getting the center cluster bezel's lower nuts off their shafts (run below the center console), is a real trick requiring a deep dish socket and an articulating driver, but it CAN be done! Just work slowly and carefully by the book to avoid breaking that hard to come by center cluster bezel....

There was only one saddle shade for 1970-72. It is what I would term "medium." Try Al Knoch or ask for color swatches.
