    C2 - 66 Rear Suspension Question

I am putting my '66 rear suspension back together after a total rebuild. I have the cross member, differential, carrier front support, spring, spring link bolts, and the trailing arms installed. I bolted the strut rod bracket onto the differential (The holes in the strut rod bracket only let it fit one way.) and connected the strut rods to the bracket. But the strut rods don't seem to line up with the spindle support. It is misaligned by 3 or 4 inches.
The service manual seems to imply that the strut rods are pulled forward to connect to the spindle support, but is 3 inches normal? Do I just pull the rods forward until they line up?
    Thanks

Take the sring loose and relieve the tension. Then push the suspension up to its normal loaded position. I think you will find that it will then fit better. Install the rods then re-install the spring.

        Rob, Wayne, and Ronnie----

The strut rod bracket cannot be mounted incorrectly; it has an asymetrical bolt pattern which makes reverse installation virtually impossible.

Also, I definitelt agree with Wayne; you want to install the strut rod assembly PRIOR to installation of the spring.

Ronnie, Before torqueing the rear spring bolts make sure you have a load on the spring (ie wheels on the ground). Otherwise it is possible to snap the ears off the differential cover. I think that's why they invented the "heavy duty" cover.

            Re: C2 - 66 Rear Suspension Question

I disconnected the bracket from the differential and installed the strut rods in the bracket. Then installed the strut rods in the carrier support. Then, using long bolts, aligned the bracket and gradually, with C-clamps and a small hydraulic jack, eased the bracket up into place. Worked fine.
